Until this very second, the story of Andrew Mostyn Powell and his musical ventures of the last 30 years have sadly been more about the music he didn't release than the music that he did.
An unheralded singer-songwriter, Powell's transition from underground to somewhat overground has never really happened when many thought it might. What matters to this label is the music – under, above or like the ground itself. Solid. Stretching way back to the mid-90s, Powell and his then band Bucket had just signed a four-album deal with New York punk rock label Radical Records after releasing two discs through Shock Records in Australia to much indie acclaim. The band broke up in 1997 and made two successful live come backs in 2000 and 2016.
Did we mention he also made an as yet unheard record in Nashville with an ex-member of Wilco?
“Circle in the Lights” is the first track to make its way into the world since 2005’s award winning “Asbestos Fibro” which is still a classic. Although there are unexpected elements of the jazz folk of Tim Buckley and drum machines, the song will still be instantly recognisable to anyone who was already a fan of Powell’s lived-in voice and lyrics. All the indie folk weariness is still all there. Though only this time it is cast in a completely new "tronica-lite" light.
We at Igloo are pinching ourselves that we managed to coax this masterpiece out of Andrew and that the world will get to hear it. Here’s to many more!
lyrics
Circle in the Lights
I know I wasn't perfect
I never said that I'd be a certainty
And in all my erstwhile searches
I never thought that could be for all eternity
And now I find the circles in the lights when I'm waking up with only birds and trees
The cameras and the thunder of the lightning of your home land skies comes over me
Now you've got a new love
Now you've got a new born and a family
Now I've got a new job
Now I've got a new stop and some friends near me
Still hammering into fireworks all this life I've buried up into this bundle of what was me
Still wondering about the costs of when you love someone that's already burned you free
You'd say what you'd want but it wasn't what you need
You'd complain when you woke and then you'd come down on me
It's the same way that you wrote, "this will not always be!
So then why was I so devote and down on my knees?
I was bounded by the hope, I even slept out of grief
While I waited for your note, or even just a plea!
When we dust, when we grow, it's really all there to see
Now I'm down here with all my dope, and you're out there somewhere being!
